Dodge City! Over 125 years after its heyday as the “Cowboy Capital,” this Kansas cattle town still celebrates its frontier heritage.

The Kansas Heritage Center is pleased to bring the thrills and excitement of this bygone era online. Our research site, Dodge City Trails & Tales, includes hundreds of newspaper articles that chronicle Dodge City's reign as “Queen of the Cowtowns.” As users will discover, Dodge City in the late 1870s offered something for everyone. While trail-weary Texas cowboys were enjoying refreshments and other entertainment in saloons, trail bosses and cattle dealers were buying and selling longhorns at the stockyards. At the same time, permanent residents of Dodge were managing their Front Street businesses, attending church socials — and establishing a community on the Great Plains that still survives.
